SHOCKED motorists dialled 999 when they saw a blind man walking along the hard shoulder of a motorway.
The man was spotted walking with a white stick close to junction 11 of the M27 yesterday afternoon.

The man, who is believed to be in his mid-40s and from the North End area of Portsmouth, was found by police heading towards Cosham at 1.30pm. They took him off the motorway.

One motorist said: 'I just couldn't believe it when I saw this bloke weaving in and out of the traffic cones, tapping them with his white stick.

'I was over on the other side of the road but I was so worried I pulled up and dialled 999 straight away.'

A spokeswoman for the police said it was an offence to walk or cycle along a motorway, and anyone caught doing it could be given a fixed penalty notice.

She said police received around a dozen calls each day about pedestrians seen walking along Hampshire's motorways and added: 'It is extremely dangerous for the pedestrians and motorists.'
