PORTSMOUTH has been named as one of most car-friendly places in Britain.
The city came eighth in a survey of the UK's 50 biggest towns and cities. They were rated on petrol and parking prices, car parks and crime.

Portsmouth used to have a high rate of car crime, but a News-backed police campaign called Operation Cobra saw figures plummet.

Telford overtook Dundee for top spot in a poll by Virgin Money Car Insurance. Northampton came bottom.

Virgin Money's Scott Mowbray said: 'No town or city is perfect, but there are pockets of the country still suitable for a Sunday drive.'

Hang on! Have I been asleep for 10months? Is it April 1st again already?

What utter tosh. Unless, of course, there is another Portsmouth in the UK that I am unaware of.....

Pompey_BD,

Not parking in costly Pompey. 24/06/2008 13:45:58
This has to be a joke. Or a story unearthed and placed here accidently from the sixties.

I was thinking a bit more about this and I realised that the headline doesn't actually match the story:

"PORTSMOUTH has been named as one of most car-friendly places in Britain."

"The city came eighth in a survey of the UK's 50 biggest towns and cities. They were rated on petrol and parking prices, car parks and crime."

Now then, to me a car-friendly city is one which you can drive through quickly and enjoy it, not one where you can finish driving in a quick and safe fashion.

Car friendly?!?

20 mph limits, parking zones, Taliban traffic wardens...

With friends like that...!

Mind you, I agree about Northampton.
