Drivers coming into Portsmouth on the motorway this morning were left scratching their heads because overhead message boards were displaying gibberish.
The strange messages – which bleary-eyed commuters mistook for French or Portuguese – first began appearing on the hi-tech electronic boards on the M27 eastbound between Fareham and Portsmouth over the weekend.

The Highways Agency said it would try to fix the problem today as drivers struggled to understand the long strings of random letters.

Stuart Thompson, Highways Agency spokesman, said: 'There is a technical fault with the gantries and we have got technicians trying to ascertain exactly what the fault is.

'Someone will be going to look at them later today. They have put new cabling in there, and there could be an issue with that.'

Why should we be worrying? Anyone who has followed these roadworks will know that right now they are re-programming the message boards, so of course things like this will happen.
