The northbound carriageway of a motorway was closed for five hours overnight after a man plunged to his death from a bridge.
A driver rang the police at 2.07am today to report a body lying in the road on the A3(M) near to the Portsdown Hill Road bridge.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

It is not known yet whether the man jumped or accidentally fell, but police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The man has yet to be identified.

The motorway was closed from the A27 offslip to the Purbrook junction on the A3(M) until around 7am today while police forensics looked for evidence at the scene.
