MOTORISTS endured miles of traffic tailbacks during this morning's rush hour after police closed the M3 in both directions.
Traffic was at a complete standstill from shortly before 6am, with queues stretching back along the westbound M27 towards Fareham.

Frustrated drivers were getting out of their cars to try to see what was going on, but police would only confirm the road closure was for 'operational reasons'.

The southbound section of the road was re-opened after 7am but the northbound section remained closed from junction 4 of the M27 to junction 13 of the M3 at Eastleigh.

Police lifted the cordons on the northbound carriageway just before 7.45am when traffic began to move again.
