Roadside interviews are to be carried out by Transport for South Hampshire to generate an accurate picture of travel patterns.
The organisation says the aim is to ensure investment is made where it is most needed.

It says that advanced notice of locations and dates for survey sites cannot be given to ensure the quality of the data received.

As a result, it warns that s
ome delays may be experienced on various routes during October and November.

Transport for South Hampshire is a recently-formed partnership working on behalf of Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council and Southampton City Council.

To gather the survey data, a sample of drivers will be interviewed and asked up to five questions.

Other drivers will be given a postcard with some questions that they will be asked to complete and return.

Partnership chairman Councillor Mel Kendal, who is also Hampshire County Council's executive member for environment, said: 'It is important that we establish a true picture of travel in south Hampshire.

'We wouldn't have a chance of doing this if we were to announce when and where the interviews were taking place. Unfortunately, it is inevitable that carrying out the surveys will cause some delays and we ask people for their understanding, co-operation and forbearance.

'It is only by gathering this vital information that we can make the most of existing capacity in our current transport system and pinpoint where and when investment needs to be made in public transport and infrastructure.'

Prepare for miles & miles of tailbacks & delays when these surveys take place (always in rush hour)

Similar surveys are conducted in Dorset & regularly cause nightmares (one on the A338 out of Bournemouth casued 8 miles of tail backs last month)

This is 2008.....use technology to read a cars number plate & then send a questionairre !!!

#1, that's recording numberplates in a public place for improper use and is therefore illegal.
