Toll lanes slammed as sneaky stealth tax

A toll lane on the M27 would be just another 'stealth tax', critics of the idea have warned.
The Government is considering turning one lane of any widened carriageway, as well as stretches of hard shoulder on congested motorways, into special fast lanes.

It could mean motorists driving on the M27 between Portsmouth and Southampton, paying £5 to use the toll lane to cruise past stationary traffic.

The M27 has been identified as one of six congestion hotspots across England, by the Department for Transport. The M3 near Southampton is also earmarked for the scheme.

Ministers are now due to sign contracts for technology trials to begin next year on the new lanes. Groups of up to 200 volunteer drivers will act as guinea pigs in the trials.

But the plans have been met with fury as many feel motorists already pay enough to use the roads and only the rich will be able to use these special fast lanes.

The leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sean Woodward, is also outraged at the idea.

He said: 'I think it's scandalous. There's not enough space to have a rich person's lane. As if drivers aren't paying enough to use the roads anyway.

'I really hope the government has not done this whole lane widening thing along the M27 as a cover up stealth tax. They sold it as a new crawler lane for lorries and now it might be used to try and create different classes of driver. It's outrageous.'

And motorist Kelly Fryer, 20, of Devonshire Way, Fareham, said: 'Don't we pay enough to use the roads already, what with road tax and petrol? It's ridiculous the government thinking of doing this.

'Not everyone would be able to afford to use the toll lanes either, so how is that fair with only those better off getting a preferential service while the rest of us sit in traffic?'

A Department for Transport spokesman said no decision on toll lanes had been taken and would only be introduced following a full public consultation.

What else do you expect from this "goverment".

If we need to raise taxes in this infernal country, raise income tax.

If you earn the money you can afford the tax. To raise money this way costs more to collect and hits the poor hardest. It also forces trafic off our motorways past our homes.

Shame on those fools in power!

I don't want to pay any more than I already do but why shouldn't we pay? We don't have a "fast track lane" at the moment so we don't pay for one. If they bring one in why shouldn't those that use them pay? Just because we don't pay for something right now doesn't mean it should be free forever. Take carrier bags at M&S - I used to get them free but now I'm charged. Accept it or change your behaviour.

It is not free now and being charged for in future.
We pay many more times more road tax and fuel tax than is spent on our roads. On top of that new homes pay a £5000 non car transport tax.

If the state need to raise £100 per person , would you rather pay them £100 each on income tax or £300 stelth tax and create a whole new army of tax men and fines and penalties?

This idea is madder than actually widening the motorway in the first place!!

Uphill, ALL they needed to do was put a sign up and enforce its instruction with:

LORRIES REMAIN IN LEFT HAND LANE FOR x MILES!

Lorries overtaking each other on uphill climbs is what causes the congestion at this point on the M27 anyway!!

Tony S - the point is you don't pay for using a special fast lane now so why should you expect one to be provided free of charge in the future? And who decided we pay far too much for our motoring anyhow? I pay what I pay because that's my choice. If I think I pay too much I try to find another way. So, if they bring these lanes in and you think it's a cheap trick to raise extra revenue, don't use them! Simple.

Paid in full via Road fund licence and VAT on fuel.
Lets have it one way or another.

This will never happen under the current government, it's such a controversial and head-in-the-cloud idea. I can tell you exactly what we need to sort out our motorway network, and so can a lot of people, but we'd all be slammed by a couple of eco-hippies.

Here's some news for you: The new lane opened today and the queues which are normally at the J11 sliproad built up where the fourth lane closed. Now do the Highways Agency see why I begged for them to build a continuous lane up to J11?
