A woman has been taken to hospital after after the car she was a passenger in collided with a bus.
The First Bus was travelling south along London Road in Hilsea when the accident occured at around 11am this morning.
It pulled out of the bus lane to go round a vehicle that was parked at a bus stop when the driver reported that the steering bec
ame heavy and she was unable to stop the bus crossing into the path of oncoming traffic.
A green Peugeot 206 was travelling northbound and there was a head-on collision with the bus.
The male driver of the car was unhurt but his mother, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham with a suspected cracked sternum.
A white Honda Concerto was also travelling north along London Road and swerved to avoid the two vehicles by mounting the pavement. The female driver of the car was shocked but not hurt.
The woman driving the bus remained at the scene and waited for the company to come and recover the bus.
PC Trevor Burden who was first on the scene said: 'At the moment everything points towards a mechanical failure with the bus but we are investigating what happened.'
At the time of the collision there were about 10 passengers travelling on the bus. They were kept on the bus and two police officers stayed with them until First Bus sent another vehicle to take them on their journey.
The bus came to the stop in the northbound bus lane facing south. The Peugeot was moved to the side of the road to allow traffic to keep moving freely in both directions.
No road closures were put in place and there were no hold-ups to traffic.
Southbound traffic had to slow down slightly to drive past the police car but did not have to cross into the oncoming traffic lane.
Recovery services arrived at midday to start taking the vehicles away.
