PART of the M27 motorway is to be closed for two nights this week to allow new hi-tech gantries to be put up.
The motorway will be closed in both directions from 10pm to 5.30am over Tuesday and Wednesday nights between junctions three and five, near Southampton.

The work is part of a £36m improvement scheme aimed at reducing delays. Work finished on a sim
ilar scheme between junctions 11 and 12 – between Fareham and Portsmouth – last month.

The scheme has added extra climbing lanes for slow- moving vehicles in a bid to ease congestion.

Stephen Coe, project manager for the Highways Agency said: 'Installing these gantries is a key milestone for these works.

'When the scheme is completed they will provide information for drivers to help them plan their onward journeys.

'The closures to install the gantries will cause some delays for drivers, but we are carrying out this work overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest to minimise disruption.

'The closures are necessary to ensure the safety of both our workforce and drivers while the gantries are installed.

We appeal to drivers to plan their journeys and to try to avoid these times if possible or to use an alternative route.'

Diversions will be clearly signed and will use the A3057 and A27 from junctions 3 and 5.

Further closures will take place on October 14 and 15, and will also be necessary in December for resurfacing and line-marking.

The three narrow lanes will continue in place with a 50mph limit enforced by 'yellow vulture' speed cameras.
