Staff at a hotel have clubbed together to organise a golfing day and dinner to help youngsters at a special needs school.
The directors at the Royal Beach Hotel in St Helen's Parade, Southsea, decided three years ago that they would put their business contacts to good use by organising events for charity.
They approached Mary Rose School in Gisors Road, Southsea, two years ago after learning that the pupils, who have moderate to severe learning difficulties, could benefit from a sensory garden.
'We wanted to help so asked what they wanted most in the school,' said Grant Murphy, one of the hotel's directors.
'They told us how much a sensory garden would benefit the children by being able to respond to different triggers like colours, sound and touch.'
The hotel's general manager Chris Gilmore and director Farid Yeganeh began ringing around local businesses suggesting they hold a golf day followed by a slap-up dinner at Meon Valley Marriott Hotel.
'We didn't need any advertising – everyone wanted to be involved and we got over 30 companies to donate either money or an item we could auction or raffle. Pompey Football Club also donated,' said Farid, 38.
On October 12 the event was held – and what a success it was! Seventy-two golfers took their clubs to Meon Valley Golf and Country Club and later partners, friends and business associates joined them for dinner at the Royal Beach where there was a raffle, auction and live music.
The most money came from a photo of Pompey scoring against Southampton in 2001, which was auctioned for more than £2,000, while the whole event raised a massive £15,000 for the school.
The money means plans for the sensory garden can now go ahead and builders are set to begin work on March 20.
Alison Beane, headmistress at Mary Rose School, said: 'We wanted to develop a sensory garden having scented plants and plants with different colours and textures to add something different to the curriculum and really be interactive for the children.
She added: 'I thought the event might raise £5,000 but £15,000 is phenomenal.'
Grant, 45, said: 'Now we have raised all of this money we are all going to get our hands dirty and help with the garden.'
The men plan to hold another golf day and lunch event on July 1 which will be held at Cams Alders, Fareham.
Then there will be a gala dinner on October 24 from which all proceeds raised will go to the Mary Rose
School.
