A supermarket worker has been honoured for her tireless efforts for charity.

Jackie Bampton, of Mitchell Road, Bedhampton, has worked at the Bedhampton Asda site for 27 years – since it was the Co-op hypermarket.

During that time she has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities both locally and internationally.

The 61-year-old has seen first-hand how her fund-raising has helped children with learning difficulties in a Romanian orphanage through the Fundatia New Life charity.

Mrs Bampton's role as the events and marketing coordinator has meant she has also been able to pull strings to help police, Leigh Park carnival and the Rowans Hospice in Purbrook.

The grandmother said: 'I am passionate about community and charity.

'I don't even think of it as work, really. When Fundatia New Life came to me four years ago I was able to organise equipment to be sent over. I'm going over for the fourth time, this year.'

She set up and runs the hugely popular Scruffs dog show every year at the Leigh Park Carnival.

Mrs Bampton was given Asda's Values Ambassador Award, winning against colleagues nationwide at a ceremony in Birmingham.

The audience heard how she provided push bikes for police and that she sits on the local community board.

In the past two years the store has raised £23,000 for the Rowans, and Mrs Bampton has come up with ideas such as sending bouquets to every resident who reaches 100. Despite being old enough to put her feet up, she is adamant she is not ready to retire yet.

Asda general store manager Jeremy Smith said: 'I couldn't think of anyone more deserving for the award. Jackie is loved among colleagues and her work in the community is fantastic.'
