A COUPLE trying to raise thousands of pounds for their disabled daughter are set to receive plenty of help – thanks to readers of The News.
Since Sharon and Lee Pannell's story appeared on February 13 they have been inundated with calls from people wanting to help.
The couple are trying to raise £4,400 to adapt their home for their five-year-old daughter Alicia, who has cerebral palsy.
The cost of the adaptations is £29,400. Gosport Borough Council is giving the couple £25,000, but can't fund all the work and so the family has to raise the rest.
But in the true spirit of our We Can Do It campaign, readers have lifted the family's spirits by flocking to help – and already nearly £400 has been donated.
'People have literally been calling up and saying "who shall I write the cheque to?",' said Mrs Pannell, 33, of Parker Close, Gosport.
'We're really overwhelmed by it all.
'It's amazing how generous people are being and has given us real hope for raising the whole amount.'
Mr and Mrs Pannell have had calls ranging from people wanting to donate £100 cheques to people who are in similar situations and just want to chat with the couple.
They have also been contacted by people who are keen to hold fund-raising events for Alicia, and one of those events will take place on Thursday. An Ann Summers party will be held at The Wheatsheaf pub in Gosport, from 7.30pm, and 30 per cent of the profits made will go to Alicia's fund.
Mrs Pannell said: 'It's so fantastic that people are actively trying to think of ways to raise money for Alicia too. We are actually planning to hold our own fund-raising event as well – an auction and raffle in July.
'We've already been approached by a businessman who's donating expensive prizes for that, and we're hoping to have get things like signed football shirts to auction off as well.'
The money raised for Alicia will provide her own room and bathroom, with the necessary disabled modifications, built on the ground floor of the Pannells' home.
Her parents say it will dramatically improve her quality of life.
