Friendly bobbies swapped their truncheons for spades in a bid to clear up local neighbourhoods they regularly patrol.
The Safer Neighbourhoods team for Milton offered to lend a hand on Kingsley Court when they noticed repeated damage to residents properties.
The team became concerned that the vandalism had put residents off coming outside, so they decided to help put some pride back into their area.
Police Community Support Officer Sophie Iles said: 'We felt the residents were avoiding coming out and this might be adding to the crime. So we thought making their gardens nicer would give them more incentive.'
The officers got £500 worth of materials, plants and soils from B&Q to help transform the gardens in a bid to get the residents out and about again.
Local resident Janet Gillard of Kingsley Road took charge delegating tasks to the officers and neighbours who spent between 10am - 3pm digging, planting, clearing and tidying the gardens and communal area.
Sophie, 24, added: 'There are some residents who are disabled and couldn't have done the gardening themselves, so they told us what they'd like and we could do it for them.
'It was really hard work – I was mainly doing borders around the gardens and I didn't realise how tiring it would be. It was very rewarding though.'
Neighbours, officers and even Milton ward councillors got their hands dirty over the two day clean-up operation on May 30 and 31.
Clare Brewer, Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant for Milton, said: 'The residents have forged a close community at Kinglsey Court and this regeneration project will complement that. We hope that the project will improve the quality of life for them.'
The residents now have a reason to come outside again and are feeling the benefits of their new gardens.
Sophie, 24, added: 'We went back the following Friday and there was a lady doing her garden because she felt more positive about being outside. Other neighbours said they had been out a lot more since we had been too.
'We wanted to make them happier and it has definitely worked.'
