GREEN-MINDED youngsters have been giving up their Easter break to transform a tired old stream back into a gushing river.
In true We Can Do It style three pals have been working tirelessly clearing piles of rubbish and mounds of scrap iron from the stream in Barry's Meadow, Titchfield, Fareham.
And without any adults helping they have dug out the muddy banks to encourage the water to flow once more.
Jack Fitt, 12, of Southampton Hill dreamed up the idea and encouraged his friends to help.
Jack said: 'The stream was completely blocked up – most streams should have some depth but this was really just a trickle.
'There was originally a big stream there but there hasn't been for some time.
'In the past we have cleared some of the trash away but we have never taken it on as a major project like this before.'
Jack and his friends, Dawn Chester and Guy Newbury, worked for up to six hours a day last week taking junk out of the stream and tidying up the edges.
They have uncovered metal boxes, piles of corrugated iron and even an old oil barrel.
And the threesome, dubbed the Titchfield Nature Squad, are far from finished.
Jack added: 'It has made a real difference – the stream has started to flow again. But we will do some more work on it. I care very much about the environment and try to do projects like this to improve it whenever I have the opportunity. It has been hard work but it is worth it.'
Ward councillor Francis Devonshire said: 'I think it is absolutely fantastic to see young people making an effort to make the village look good in this way and using their initiative to do something that will make the village better for everyone.
'I know Barry's Meadow well as my own children have spent much time playing there, and I'm sure that what these young people are doing will be a wonderful improvement.'

Such a shame that it was left to a group of young schoolchildren to sort out the mess though, eh Mr Devonshire?

Well done to the children. Shame on grumpy old man Whiteley resident. I hope he doesn't have children.

Something got your goat today, hasn't it? As usual, so quick to jump in that you've missed the point. Again. Too busy thinking up new email addresses maybe?

Just wondering why everything that is good news is bad news to you. Obviously one of those unfortunate souls for whom the cup is always half empty.

Good news that kids are left to sort out the mess? What a mixed up world you live in!

To normal people it is children clearing up in their community, a beneficial scheme of the sort that children have engaged in for generations. To you it is some sort of exploitation. What a mixed up and jaundiced world you live in!

"Without any adult helping..."

I'm surpriswed you don't feel ashamed. But then again...

I'm glad I don't live where you live!

With adults like you about with such a negative view of initiative I am sure they are better off doing it by themselves. Good to see such an initiative.
