CHICHESTER songwriter Tom Odell has become the first man to clinch the critics’ choice award at The Brits.
The prize goes to acts who are tipped by critics for mainstream success and who are yet to release their official debut album.
Tom, 22, who has been writing songs since he was 13, released his EP Songs From Another Love this year. He has performed on the BBC’s Later... with Jools Holland show. Tom said: ‘I’m thrilled and honoured to win the Brits critics’ choice award. I genuinely can’t believe it.’
In previous years the award has been given to Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, Florence and the Machine and Adele.
Tom said: ‘Looking at the list of amazing female artists who have won the award already, I just hope I don’t let the boys down!’
The winner is chosen by a panel made up of music editors and heads of radio and music TV stations.
