An eight-year-old from Gosport made his professional stage debut this week in Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Southampton Mayflower.
Benjamin Dawson got a part in the production, which stars Jason Donovan, after his first audition.
The Gomer Junior School and St Vincent College Stageskool pupil plays Benji, the long-lost son of drag queen Tick.
His onstage father is played this week by Noel Sullivan of Hear’Say fame and next week by star of screen, stage and song Jason Donovan. ‘Obviously we were all ecstatic that he got the part,’ says mum Claire Dawson.
‘Benjamin is so excited to be in the show and hopes this will lead to more parts in the future.’
The award-winning Australian musical follows three friends glamming up the Outback en route to Alice Springs where they’ll perform a drag act.
‘It’s not a traditional Lloyd Webber, Mackintosh or Disney-style musical,’ says star Jason.
‘It’s a great example of why people love musicals. It’s like a concert. At the end, everyone stands up and gets into it. You wouldn’t get that with something like Julius Caesar.’
Tickets: £27 to £35 from (023) 8071 811 or mayflower.org.uk.
