THE line-up for the final of All About the Song has been completed with the announcement of the wildcard entry.
Over the past three weeks, the region’s finest singing and songwriting talents have been battling it out over six heats held at The Cellars in Eastney, in The News-backed contest.
Sophie Darling, from Henderson Road in Eastney, came second in the first of those six heats, but impressed the judges so much that she was chosen as their wildcard entry.
The 18-year-old said: ‘It’s so exciting.
‘I had almost forgot that this was an option.
‘I’m incredibly chuffed to make it into the final.
‘Playing at the Wedge will be awesome – I’ve been to so many gigs there and always wondered what it would be like to be on the stage.’
The final takes place this Sunday at The Wedgewood Rooms, where contestants will each play four songs in a bid to impress the expert judges.
Unlike in the heats, the judges’ decision is final – the audience and other performers will not get a vote.
The judges on the night will be producer and performing artist on the acclaimed DFA record label, Tobin Prinz, and Kairen Kemp, producer for BBC Introducing: The South.
Steve Pitt, who runs The Cellars, and was a judge in the heats, said: ‘The overall quality this year was the best it has been in six years that we have been running competitions like this.
‘We’ve got seven excellent finalists and probably for the first time ever, I can’t call who is going to win on Sunday – it’s going to be a good show.’
Sophie joins the other finalists:
n Jack New, from Portsmouth.
n Sarah Corcoran, performing as Bluebird, is 28 and from Chichester Road in North End.
n Billy Gregory, 20, from Portsmouth.
n Dani Uziel, 16, of Devonshire Square, Fratton, Portsmouth.
n Eloise Keating, 18, from Portsmouth.
n Paul Jones, 34, from Hayling Island.
Tickets for Sunday cost £5. Doors open at 7.30pm and the first act will be on at 8pm.
