AS PART of this year’s Portsmouth Festivities, a choir will perform a new work based on the daily shipping forecast.

The quirky new piece, called Shipping Forecast, can be heard for the first time in Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral on Saturday when Portsmouth Festival Choir celebrates its 40th anniversary.

It was inspired by poetry written by Portsmouth-born poet Sean Street, which he based on BBC Radio 4’s regular shipping updates.

The rest of city’s space-themed festivities events will also kick off today with a cosmic concert and the arrival of husband and wife astronaut team, Andrew Thomas and Shannon Walker, who will tell youngsters from Portsmouth Grammar School about their adventures.

Portsmouth Festival Choir will perform at 7.30pm. Call Paula Bothwell on 01420 489316 to buy tickets.
