FRIENDS and family of a DJ who died last year are holding a fundraising night to mark his birthday.

Berry’s Birthday – Foundation Fundraiser is taking place at the Old Barn in Milton, Portsmouth, tonight, in tribute to the popular local DJ Matt Berry.

DJs Chris Vaux and Liz Cornick will be playing sets on the night, but others can suggest or bring tracks along to play for a suggested donation of £2.

Money raised on the night will go towards setting up a foundation in Matt’s name, which will work with disadvantaged young people.

Chris, who was a close friend of Matt, said: ‘We’ve linked up with Motiv8, the charity which works with young people across Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

‘Matt did a lot of work with young people himself.

We want it to be a celebration, for people to enjoy themselves and to remember Matt

‘He did counselling for Portsmouth Foyer. His role was to help them out and get through their problems.

‘We wanted to create a foundation and do something positive for the local community in Matt’s name in the spirit of what he did.’

Through working with Motiv8 and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, they intend to set up a scheme for young people to get involved in DJing and electronic music.

‘We’ve already got lots of DJs offering their time for free,’ Chris added.

Although the event is tonight, it would have been Matt’s birthday tomorrow, so at midnight a Star Wars Stormtrooper cake will be brought out, and his favourite song, Superstylin’ by Groove Armada will be played.

‘We want it to be a celebration, for people to enjoy themselves and to remember Matt,’ said Chris.

Matt was named posthumous winner of this year’s Best DJ at The Guide Awards in January, after winning the public vote by a landslide.

Amid emotional scenes, his sister Rebecca Glew collected the award on Matt’s behalf.

At an inquest last September, the coroner ruled that Matt took his own life after debts spiralled out of control.

The event kicks off at 8pm tonight, until 1.30am. Entry will be £5 on the door.
