The Jamie Taylor Quartet were a perfect choice to launch shows at the smaller Harlequin rooms at Portsmouth Guildhall.

It was certainly a pleasant, novel experience after many years of seeing bands in the main hall.

Jamie Taylor himself is a towering presence, dressed in a sharp suit, sitting stage left, at his Hammond organ orchestrating his well-drilled band through the ubiquitous Starsky and Hutch Theme - probably his best known tune and a blistering Green Onions. Tracks from the new album Closer To The Moon are a more acquired taste but vocalist Yvonne Yanney added a soulful texture to the show and flautist John Willmott was a perfect foil to Jamie’s funky Hammond keyboard.

Mr Taylor was certainly enjoying himself as much as the crowd, remarking they were better than ‘Ronnie Scott’s’ – high praise indeed.
