Mercury prize-nominated singer Ben Howard arrived at Southampton Guildhall on Monday night to do a sell-out show.
There was a lot of tension as the crowd gradually became more and more impatient for him to start, although support act Willy Mason was met with rapturous applause when he played the well-known Oxygen.
The first half of Ben’s set was particularly melancholy for the young folk singer – typical of his music, but it did tend to seem a little self-indulgent.
The second half was much more of a crowdpleaser as he pulled out favourites such as The Wolves and Keep Your Head Up.
One of the difficult things about Southampton’s Guildhall is how seating is all on one level, so there tended to be a lot of leaning around people to catch a glimpse of the singer.
But Ben Howard is an incredibly talented songwriter and singer. Yes, at times it did feel like you were waiting around, but it took nothing away from the music that fans were there to appreciate.
