It might surprise you but Thomas Ian Nicholas, better known as Kevin from the American Pie movie franchise, also plays guitar and he’s actually pretty good at it.
The Hollywood heartthrob has until recently specialised in a warm, lyrical grunge-infused sound but earlier this year he had his fifth studio release with EP Security which sees a departure from his musical roots.
‘I mainly grew up on classic rock so my main thing is lyrics that you can understand and melodic content,’ says Thomas.
‘For the last seven to eight years I’ve been doing post grunge and now I decided to take a left turn and do some indy rock. I’m still a big fan of the grunge sound but I just felt I needed to shed my history and join the modern world while still keeping my feet in the past.’
Citing Phoenix, Temper Trap, Atlas Genius and Young Giants among his influences Thomas is touring his new sound with his third visit to the UK, playing at Drift Bar, Southsea on Sunday.
Thomas’ passion for music is now also part of his on screen work as he currently plays the role of musician Nick in tv series Red Band Society, but it seems Thomas still knows where his real passion lies.
‘Acting is me showing you who I pretend to be and music is me being myself,’ he confides.
Thomas plays the Drift Bar, Southsea alongside Bigtopp, The Silhouettes, The Response and LEVI on Sunday at 7pm. Tickets:£4, Call (023) 9277 9839.
