As a regular at the Wedgewood Comedy Club, I didn’t take lightly the decision to opt for a night out at the Spinnaker instead.
However, with three names on the bill I’d seen before, I was certainly not disappointed.
Up first was James Redmond. Perhaps most recognised for his roles in Hollyoaks and Casualty, the Emmerdale actor has turned to comedy in recent years. I last saw him at Banter in Havant three years ago and his improvement since then is incredible; slick and sophisticated, it was like a different performer.
Canadian comedian Bobby Mair was the only act I was not familiar with, but his self-deprecating awkwardness and conversational style is not to be missed.
Saving the best until last, Zoe Lyons is a sensation. The audience reaction was fantastic; there’s a reason why her fan base is ever-growing. Fresh from a stint at the Edinburgh Festival, her compelling routine of side-splitting anecdotes and flawless observational comedy is as good as I’ve seen her.
As ever, host James Alderson was simply hilarious too. The local comic deserves a bigger stage.
