Co-owner Martyn Knight said: ‘This is totally out of the blue – we didn’t expect this at all.

‘I would like to say thank you to everyone who’s supported us, we were up against some really good businesses there.’

Martyn thinks the Osborne Road cafe has been such a success because they fill a niche that the chain stores don’t.

‘There was no-one down here doing anything like it. We add that extra bit of customer service and have put in a lot of hard work. We did some market research and saw a gap in the market.’

And he paid tribute to his wife Tara as the brains behind the project: ‘She’s the most amazing, driven woman you will ever meet, she doesn’t like treading water.’

The couple have got big plans for the coming year, but Martyn added: ‘We have got some exciting things coming up, but we are keeping them close to our chests for the moment.’

As winners of The Guide Award in this category, the company will now go forward to take part in the Johnston Press South Business Awards, held in Brighton in October.
