A stripped-down production based on real experiences of the D-Day landings will be performed in Lee-on-the-Solent tomorrow.
Five Beaches begins on June 5, when men are crammed into vessels for the long-awaited trip across the Channel.
From Gosport Hardway to the landings on Utah, Juno, Sword, Gold and Omaha, the play depicts the soldiers as they come to terms with what awaits them when their crafts reach the shore.
Featuring an all-male ensemble, the performance has no props, lighting or sound effects other than what the cast create.
Written by News columnist Zella Compton and produced by Bay House School, the play is based on her uncle’s D-day experience and uses veterans’ dialogue.
Zella says: ‘My youngest cast members are 14. The rest of them are old enough to have been on boats on their way to the beaches. It makes me shudder.’
Five Beaches takes place at St Faiths Church, Lee-on-the-Solent tomorrow at 2pm. Suggested donation of £3 on the door.
