After a critically-acclaimed run at the London Coliseum in July, the English National Ballet’s production of Coppélia comes to The Mayflower, Southampton as part of a UK tour from Wednesday to Saturday.
Coppélia is the comic tale of an eccentric toymaker and his mechanical doll. Swanilda is engaged to Franz but he has his eye on the mysterious girl sitting on the balcony of Dr Coppélius’s house.
But what Franz doesn’t realise is that she is a doll that the toymaker is trying to bring to life.
When Swanilda and her friends sneak into the Doctor’s workshop it looks as though he has succeeded, but love triumphs over all in this comedy of mistaken identity.
This light-hearted production is choreographed by Ronald Hynd. Léo Delibes’ score is played by the Ballet’s full orchestra.
Following their debut performances as Franz and Swanilda, Yonah Acosta performs alongside Shiori Kase on tour.
Other lead roles in Coppélia include Junor Souza, who was recently promoted to first soloist and Lauretta Summerscales, Tamara Rojo, Alejandro Virelles and Erina Takahashi.
The English National Ballet’s production of Coppélia comes to The Mayflower from October 15-18 at 7.30pm with matinees at 2.30pm on Thursday and 2pm on Saturday. Tickets cost £10.75-£48.50, call (023) 8071 1811 or visit ballet.org.uk/coppelia
