A titanic programme is on offer from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at Portsmouth Guildhall on Thursday, November 24 (7.30pm).
Mahler initially gave his first symphony the nickname ‘Titan’ and although he soon withdrew it, the music is on an epic scale.
Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto is known as the Emperor. The composer did not sanction that but it is a heroic work with a profound slow movement.
Soloist will be French-Canadian Louis Lortie with Dutchman Kees Bakels conducting.
Tickets cost £23 to £13 (kids-a-quid) from (023) 9282 4355 or portsmouthguildhall.co.uk.
