It might be the middle of summer but things are also hotting up for panto season with a new series of stars announced for the Kings’ show, Aladdin.
Pantomime veteran Aiden J Harvey takes on the role of Wishee Washee and will be joined by two local stars; New Apollo Theatre Company founder Christopher Marlowe as the Empress of China and actor/director Jack Edwards as Abanazar.
Jack has had a busy year directing the Portsmouth Player’s successful production of Grease, appearing in BBC movie London Road and currently performing as Salieri’s Cook in Chichester Festival Theatre’s Amadeus.
Despite his hectic schedule Jack is already looking forward to the panto season and to working with an old friend.
‘I’ve wanted to play in panto at the King’s for a while,’ says Jack. ‘It’s very exciting. I’m good friends with Anthony Costa. I directed him in 2006 in an Easter production of Beauty and the Beast in Chatham.’
Anthony, former member of boy band Blue, will appear in the prodcution’s lead role, Aladdin, opposite Jack who stars as the villain of the piece, Abanazar.
‘Anthony is great to work with,’ says Jack. ‘What you see is what you get. There’s no airs and graces, he’s very committed and talented.
‘Abanazar is the baddy in Aladdin. I’ve only ever played ugly sisters and they are comedy villains. For me it will be difficult whether or not to play him as a straight villain or a comedy villain. I hope it goes more comedy though because I think that’s more interesting.
‘The great thing about playing a villain is that when you get booed it’s a good thing!’ chuckles Jack.
Aladdin will be at the Kings Theatre, Southsea from December 9, 2014 until January 4, 2015. Tickets: £8.00–£25.50, concessions available.
