In all his years as artistic director of The Nuffield, Patrick Sandford has shown a bold commitment to new writing.
His last production, Chris Dunkley’s Smallholding, gives him a dynamic script and a winning vehicle for two terrific actors.
Andy and Jen take on a small farm in the village they grew up in, mainly to put trust back into their marriage after Andy comes out of rehab.
The success of all good two-handers depends on us wanting to see two equally absorbing characters grow and move on through their interaction - wherever that might lead. Matti Houghton as Jen and Chris New as Andy invest this short play with energy and great emotional weight. Both are charismatic, highly physical performers, being funny and manic.
We may make our judgements of them but we cannot deny their humanity. Until Saturday.
