When The Bodyguard was first released in cinemas back in 1992, it became one of the year’s biggest grossing films.

So I was intrigued to see how it would transform to the stage when I sat down at The Mayflower in Southampton.

The musical tells the story of superstar Rachel Marron, who needs a new bodyguard after someone begins stalking her. The role of Rachel is played by former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

While some former winners of the show have seen their careers disappear, Alexandra Burke’s has hit a high.

Her performance on stage is undeniably fantastic.

I was absolutely blown away by the power and beauty of her voice which is right up there with the talents of Whitney Houston herself, who played Rachel in the hit film.

What I particularly loved about the show is that it doesn’t just include the original soundtrack, but it features many of Houston’s other hits including I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Greatest Love Of All.

The phenomenal finale featured the film’s biggest hit and one of the biggest selling singles of the 90s, I Will Always Love You, which led to a well deserved standing ovation from the audience.

It was an absolutely extraordinary ending to an extraordinary show.

Until Saturday, February 28.
