The 95-year-old has taken the decision with the support of the Queen, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.
A statement said: ‘The Duke of Edinburgh is Patron, President or a member of over 780 organisations, with which he will continue to be associated, although he will no longer play an active role by attending engagements.

The prince has visited Portsmouth many times during his life, including in recent years.
In November 2013 he made a surprise visit to the Mary Rose Museum for a private tour.
He also visited the National Museum of the Royal Navy in his role as Lord High Admiral.
