Thanks to cat-lover Caroline Charlton, of Binsteed Road, Buckland, and the two charities which came to the rescue, everything in the garden was lovely for the formerly-starved animals.
Mrs Charlton fed and encouraged the timid black mother cat, pictured, which, with four of its offspring, was scratching a living in neighbouring gardens.

Hide AdShe said: ‘The cats were hounded from one garden to the next and they didn’t see much human kindness.
‘They didn’t ask to be kept out in the cold and half-starved, but they were far too wild for me to domesticate.’
