The Blues missed out on a move for Millwall’s Ben Thompson, while they didn’t bring in an additional striker many fans thought was needed.
While it’s just more than 10 weeks until the January transfer window opens, Pompey can still add to their squad in the form of free agents.
There are still plenty of players without a club, perhaps more so than usual given the financial climate.
Here’s a look at several players that could suit the Blues.
1. Andrew Surman
The midfielder has been training with Luton but did not sign on deadline day. The Hatters also signed two midfielders before the window closed. Surman would add experience and a bit of quality. While wages could make a move tough, he could be tempted by staying on the south coast following his release from Bournemouth. Photo: Jordan Mansfield
2. Jordy Hiwula
The striker enjoys a goal at Fratton Park, having bagged twice against Pompey in recent seasons. Hiwula bagged 17 goals in 61 games during his two years at Coventry and was part of their League One title-winning squad. Would add pace. Photo: Morgan Harlow
3. George Thorne
The midfielder was playing for free for Oxford at the end of last season, having had his injuries at Derby. U's boss Karl Robinson said Thorne used to be one of the best midfielders in the Championship. Photo: Gareth Copley
4. Jackson Irvine
The Australia international left Hull at the end of June despite being vice-skipper. Still without a club and would know the likes of Tom Naylor and Marcus Harness, having played with them at Burton. Photo: Nigel Roddis
