New Billy Line signal is unveiled in Hayling Island

A CELEBRATION was held to mark the opening of the newly-refurbished Hayling Billy Line signal and new pathway.

Mayor of Havant, Councillor Leah Turner, had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the event held in Hayling Island on Saturday.

She said: ‘It was lovely. It is a beautiful signal and it is really evocative of the history of the Billy Line.’

The former Hayling Billy Line signal originates from circa 1950 when the railway line linked the mainland with the island.

The signal was restored to its former glory by The Hayling Billy Heritage Project – a partnership of Havant Borough Council, Hampshire County Council and Hayling BEST.

Cllr Turner praised the collaborative working on the project, which cost £19,800 and was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and a donation of £300 from the local community.

The new pathway, which links the Billy Line to Havant Road, was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Veolia Environmental Trust.
