SHOPS and firms from across the region are being asked to attend a celebration for small businesses.

Portsmouth City Council is backing Small Business Saturday, which takes place this weekend.

The event encourages customers to help boost the local economy by using independent companies.

The council has agreed to offer free parking all day at both Wootton Street and London Road car park in Cosham, Stubbington Avenue car park in North End, Ashby Place car park in Southsea and Clarence Street car park in the city centre.

At last year’s event, £717m was spent on small businesses, an increase of 15 per cent on 2015 spending.

Those taking part can go to smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com for a free promotional pack and ideas. Traders joining the day can also contact business@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
