CHRISTMAS is coming to Hayling with the annual late-night shopping extravaganza.

Mengham Road will be closed from 3.30pm tomorrow to make way for singing, a procession and all sorts of fun.

There will be fairground rides all night and schoolchildren from across the island will form a procession and sing Christmas songs with the Mayor of Havant, Councillor Gerald Shimbart. From 5pm to 7pm children’s author Sara Starbuck will be signing her books and holding a writers’ workshop at the Hayling Island Bookshop.

The Hayling College Band will perform at 6pm and there will be a bell ringing concert at 6.45pm at the URC Church Hall.

That will be followed at 7.45pm by the Igloo Ukulele Choir at the same venue.

In Mengham Road there will be fun fair rides, a barbecue, and a snow machine.

The Hayling Lions have a Santa’s Grotto in the Conservative Hut in Elm Grove.

Roy Marshall, chairman of the Mengham Business Association, which organises the event, said: ‘It is a bit of a boost for trade but we do it to give something back to the community.’
