Building society looking for good causes in Portsmouth

A BUILDING society is on the lookout for community groups which need a hand as the country prepares to mark Volunteers' Week.

Staff at the city’s branch of the Yorkshire Building Society have spent time helping local causes over the past 10 years, including the Lifehouse Soup Kitchen in Southsea.

They are inviting charities and community groups to call in at their Commercial Road branch and find out ways they can benefit from the volunteering scheme.

Branch manager Emma Palmer said: ‘Volunteers’ Week is a great reminder of the contribution voluntary work can make across the country.

‘We know first-hand about the impact it has brought in Portsmouth. We have seen that time can be just as valuable a gift as money to charities and community groups.’

Volunteers’ Week takes place annually to celebrate the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK.

This year it is being held from June 1-7.

The building society’s volunteering scheme allows each member of staff up to 31 hours’ paid leave a year to help out at a charity or good cause.
