PORTSMOUTH businesses could be superfast in time for Cyber Monday if they apply for cash to boost their broadband.

With one month to go until the busiest online trading day of the year on December 1, digital economy Minister Ed Vaizey urged small and medium-sized enterprises in the city to apply for a Connection Voucher to upgrade their internet speed and resilience in time for the seasonal surge in sales.

In the run-up to Christmas, online sales are 40 per cent higher than an average month.

So far 19 businesses in the Portsmouth have shared £24,000 of investment.

Each voucher covers installation costs up to £3,000 but businesses can also apply as a group to connect bigger, more complicated premises. Once installed, businesses pay the ongoing costs.

Mr Vaizey said: ‘The festive season is a crucial, busy time but with faster and more reliable broadband, businesses can not only survive it but can thrive.’
