Calls for decision over Havant town centre revamp to be postponed

PEOPLE are demanding a decision over a £15m redevelopment is postponed.

Councillors have been recommended to approve a 130-flat housing development in Market Parade, Havant, at a meeting tomorrow.

But this week the council has publicised details of an informal exhibition next Tuesday where potential ideas for the redevelopment of the wider Market Parade site will be revealed.

It comes as the council has received government funding to work up a Local Development Order (LDO), which is a comprehensive plan for the area that could help to speed up the planning process.

Havant resident Bob Comlay said the decision should be deferred until after the exhibition.

But Cllr David Guest, head of planning, said the application had to be determined ‘on its own merits’ and the deadline was very close. He said: ‘If we don’t determine the application by the due date we would be in default.’

If the council did not make a decision the developer could appeal to the government for approval, he said. The LDO will not be ready until June. The planning meeting starts at 5pm at The Plaza. The exhibition takes place from 12.30pm to 2.30pm at Havant United Reformed Church.
