PEOPLE are being warned not to fall foul of loan sharks or high-cost moneylenders in the run-up to Chistmas.

Chichester District Council and the West Sussex Credit Union are working together to help prevent vulnerable and low income families from falling into a spiral of debt.

Andrew Pilley, the council’s community development manager, said: ‘We know how expensive Christmas can be and that it can be a struggle to find a way to afford it. We want to make sure that our residents do not fall foul of loan sharks or high-cost lenders during the festive period.

‘The West Sussex Credit Union encourage members to start saving as they borrow.

‘They also offer free budgeting advice and money guidance to help people feel able to enjoy Christmas 2012 debt free.’

There are more than 74,000 income-deprived households in West Sussex and an estimated 40,000 customers of high cost lenders, many of whom have no bank account.’

The West Sussex Credit Union is a not-for-profit organisation. For more information call Mr Pilley on (01243) 534858 or visit
