Caring fundraisers across Portsmouth area raise thousands for Sport Relief
PEOPLE across the region have been getting active to raise money for Sport Relief.
The huge effort saw thousands of pounds being raised for the cause, part of Comic Relief’s efforts to support vulnerable communities around the globe.
More than 100 people who work at Langstone Technology Park gave up their lunch-break to go for a run.
Many donned fluorescent clothing and there were cheers as the runners crossed the finish line.
Claire Mayne of Fasset, which runs the park, said: ‘It’s gone really well.
‘People ran one mile or as many miles as they wanted within 30 minutes or 60 minutes.
‘Some did the full 60 minutes.’
She added: ‘It’s a really good event to get people involved in. People of all fitness levels take part.
‘We’ve had some people take part who have never run before, so that’s brilliant.’
Meanwhile in Fareham, around 40 children and adults from local churches pulled on their walking boots to raise money for Sport Relief.
They came together for the 5km walk around the town, taking in all the churches as they went.
Rev Garry Roberts, curate at Holy Trinity with St Columba Churches, who helped to organise the event, said: ‘The idea came from the young people. They wanted to raise money for those who are not as fortunate as themselves.
‘Not only was it a great opportunity to raise money for Sport Relief, but it was great to see the generations coming together, walking side by side and chatting together.’
The money is still coming in, but the group is hoping to have raised about £700.
Managers of Sainsbury’s stores across the area met for a cycle ride to raise extra cash.
Darren Noonan was one of the cyclists who participated in the sponsored ride to 22 different stores and said it was great to see people cheering him and his colleagues on as they crossed the finishing line.
He said: ‘Sainsbury’s has been supporting Sport Relief for many, many years and we decided we wanted to do something iconic.’
Their goal was to raise up to £3,000.
