STAFF at a Portsmouth firm are flying high after celebrating its 85th birthday.
Portsmouth Aviation Ltd in Airport Service Road is in its third generation of family ownership.
Staff at the mechanical and aircraft engineering company yesterday celebrated the achievement with a big birthday cake, Buck’s Fizz and a speech from managing director Simon Escott.
Mr Escott says the company continues to deliver ‘innovative, lean and best practice’ engineering solutions across a range of defence and commercial sectors.
He said: ‘Our capabilities and expertise are channelled to our growing customer base via our people and teams who consistently perform with enthusiasm, commitment and flexibility.
‘Our recent drive for global expansion has seen Portsmouth Aviation facilities established in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Canada, securing jobs both at home and abroad for the foreseeable future.
‘Our drive for excellence has led to the development of new products and new markets, including China, and our growing order book and financial status has enabled considerable new financial investment in plant and machinery at our Portsmouth facility.’
Around 90 per cent of Portsmouth Aviation’s workforce is from the Portsmouth and surrounding areas.
Apprentices from the area are also being brought on through the firm’s programme.
Mr Escott added: ‘For many years we have also provided support to our local communities through school partnerships, school aerospace challenges, and sponsorship of Clanfield Boys football team.
‘We are also proud to provide support to the Children of Chernobyl who visit Portsmouth every year for much deserved respite stays within our local community.
‘Our goal and drive as a local business remains to provide a thriving future for the families, friends and workforce that are Portsmouth Aviation Ltd.’
