A BARCLAYS branch in Portsmouth has completed its transition into the digital age – turning its counter around and putting customers in control.
The Commercial Road bank now has just one manned counter, with staff on the shop floor, ready to help people with using the technology.
Branch manager Mark Wiggett says as more and more people use online and mobile banking, the needs of people using high street banks have changed.
‘We have the same number of people working here as before but they are all out on the floor instead of being behind counters,’ he said.
‘You don’t have to fill in any slips now. You just walk up to the machine. It can do all of the functions you could do with someone serving you at a counter.
‘Some of the people who were working behind the counter are now giving advice to people about services and products available.
‘We are making it very easy for people to use the bank, but if a customer wanted to speak to someone about something more complex than paying money in or transferring it, we have still got a counter that people can use. It is still popular for our business customers.’
The bank has retrained 7,500 staff nationwide to assist customers will digital problems. The branch runs a number of events to help customers get online.
