City one of the UK's best sites for entrepreneurs

PORTSMOUTH has been crowned one of the best places in the UK for budding entrepreneurs to start a business.

The city was ranked fifth in a national study by UK Domains, above the likes of Winchester, Salisbury, Norwich and Bath.

Fifty-nine of Britain’s biggest cities were assessed as part of the study, with analysts looking at which areas would benefit most from new start-up businesses.

The revelation has been welcomed by Ben Dowling, the co-founder of Portsmouth-based social enterprise team Unloc.

Unloc looks to support young people in starting up their own businesses.

Mr Dowling said: ‘This is really positive news. Only a few years ago Portsmouth had half the start-up rate and double the failure rate compared to Brighton.

People young and old starting their own businesses is really positive thing for Portsmouth. We need and welcome more small businesses coming to the city.’

Topping the list was Oxford, followed by Inverness, Cambridge and Durham.

Southampton was not featured in the top 10.
