This year, The News’ One Summer’s Day competition returned on a great day that was enjoyed by hundreds of families in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas.

The premise was simple – take one snap that summed up your day and send it in.

Hundreds of photos were submitted and judged by The News’ images editor Sarah Standing.

She said: ‘All of the pictures sent in summed up what a wonderful summer we have had this year.

‘I especially liked the unusual horse picture that showed Catriona Cleugh from Hambledon sharing her smoothie with her horse, but this year’s winner had to be Kimberly Barrett’s snap of her husband and son enjoying the Victorious Festival.

‘They looked so happy and the picture really captured their father-son bond.’

Kimberly, from Milton, said she was delighted to win the competition.

The 28-year-old said: ‘It is a fantastic competition. It’s great to be able to show everyone what people get up to in their summer holidays.’

She took the picture to capture her husband Tom, 29, who works at Richer Sounds in Southampton, spending precious family time with their five-year-old son Jacob.

The mum-of-two said: ‘My husband works really long hours and we rarely get to spend a lot of time together.

‘He’s not had any time off this summer, and last year was my son’s first year at school, so we made sure we went to Victorious together and spent the day as a family.

‘The way they are together is exactly how they are in the picture.’

The family, including two-year-old Noah, spent the day at Victorious Festival in Southsea on Saturday.

Kimberly said: ‘It was amazing. The kids love it, especially the activities in the kids’ area. There’s something for everybody there. It is such a good thing for Portsmouth.’

Although, the fun proved too much for Jacob, who fell asleep one song into his favourite band’s set – the Manic Street Preachers.

The family are now looking forward to making the most of their prize – a four-night midweek break with competition sponsor Bunn Leisure in Selsey.

Kimberly said: ‘I’m definitely pleased to have won.

‘My husband has some time off at the end of October, so we can spend some proper family time together then.’
