GAME stores across Portsmouth may close as part of a three-year reduction plan.

The company has informed 19 of its stores that they will be closed but has not announced publicly which ones will be affected.

Commercial Road in Portsmouth has two Game stores, with one of those inside Cascades, and there is also an outlet in Fareham Shopping Centre.

In total the retailer wants to shut 85 stores over a three-year period, leaving 550 nationwide open by 2013.

Regional managing director Martyn Gibbs said: ‘This was part of a detailed review to ensure that our stores are in the right locations for our customers, and we have already started to move some locations accordingly.

‘Since the statement in April 2010, we have opened or relocated 13 stores and closed 19, as well as 25 Debenhams concessions.

‘This year we will continue with this strategy and we have informed 19 stores that we are proposing closure in the coming weeks. This is never easy news to announce and I am aware of the impact of these decisions on our people.’
