New Southsea restaurant owner promises longer opening hours will not cause disturbance

Have your say

With this bank holiday, it really feels as though the summer has kicked off.

Whether you were one of the thousands taking in the star turns at the Summer Show, or you joined hundreds of people at the Rural Show in Southsea, it was a weekend for getting out and about.

And as The News shows today – and as we have said before – Portsmouth is punching well above its weight when it comes to its cultural attractions.

The Summer Show’s a great example. Starting last year, it was already a great success.

But this year’s event was bigger and better.

That’s clear to see on the faces of the people we picture today.

And the organiser’s hope to improve things yet further for next year.

We echo MP Penny Mordaunt’s words.

She says hosting events such as this shows the city can handle major attractions and thrive.

She goes on to say it’s yet another piece of evidence that our great city would be the perfect host for the Grand Depart of the Tour de France.

We couldn’t agree more. Portsmouth is showing itself time and time again to be right up there with the best of them in terms of hosting major events.

Anything that helps with the bid for Le Tour can only be a good thing.

And it’s just the start as far as major events is concerned.

Still to come – and this is not an exclusive list – is powerboat racing off Southsea then the America’s Cup itself.

And of course the summer is rounded off with Victorious Festival.

So we hope you enjoyed your bank holiday weekend and take some pride in what Portsmouth has to offer. You should.
