FIRMS in the Portsmouth area are leading the way when it comes to exports – and more companies should follow suit.

That’s the message from Lewis Scott, south east regional director for UK Trade and Investment.

He picked three firms – Wiggle in Portsmouth; Formaplex in Havant; and Vohkus in Segensworth – as exporting beacons.

They were all featured in the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200, which details UK companies with the fastest-growing overseas sales.

At number 44 Wiggle, an online sports goods retailer, which ships cycling, running, swimming and triathlon accessories to 95 countries, boosted sales by 84 per cent over the last two years.

Formaplex, which makes components for international motor racing teams, also boosted sales by 84 per cent and came in at number 45.

Ranking in 68th place Vohkus, a computer hardware reseller, boosted international sales by 66 per cent.

Lewis said: ‘These firms set a tremendous example which I would urge other local businesses to follow.

‘Boosting our export performance is crucial if we are to secure long-term, sustainable economic growth.

‘What they really demonstrate is the strength of exporters in the area and the positive impact exporting can have on their company.’
