Consultation launched over plans to move Yomper statue to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

It comes after the Eastney community rallied against plans to move the Falklands War memorial from its base outside the Royal Marines Museum.

The museum is considering moving the Yomper to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard once it relocates there in 2019.

But now museum bosses have set up an online consultation so people can have their say over the proposal.

It is a year-long exercise to decide what should finally happen.

The museum is seeking to move after it was awarded £2m from Chancellor George Osborne’s fund for military charities in 2015.

The announcement has prompted questions about the future of the Yomper, which marks the entrance to the museum and is a popular feature of the seafront.

Professor Dominic Tweddle, director general of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, said: ‘We haven’t come to any firm conclusion, and that’s why we would like to hear the views and opinions about what we should do.’
