However the the pub was destroyed by an arson attack in 2005 and demolished.

The 0.11-acre plot of land is among 131 lots being sold by regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson.

Guided at £600,000-plus, the freehold site has planning permission for student apartments.

Rob Marchant, Hampshire auctioneer for Clive Emson, said: ‘It’s no longer a mystery, if you pardon the pun, as to the potential future of this city centre site.

‘We’ve been instructed by the private land owner to auction the site, which has approval from the city council for a three-storey, purpose-built block comprising four five-bedroom and one six-bedroom cluster apartments.

‘They are ideally located for letting in the local student rental marketplace. Alternatively, prospective purchasers may wish to seek alternative planning, subject to planning consents.’

Also offered for sale, with a freehold guide price of £120-130,000, is three lock-up shops at 123, 125 and 127 Stoke Road, Gosport.

Rob said: ‘Currently arranged as one trading unit, Stoke Road has acquired a reputation for being something of a niche trading street.

‘Prospective owners may wish to continue the premises as is or divide into individual trading units.

‘The purchase includes the freehold interest in the two first-floor flats, which have both been sold off on a long-leasehold basis.’
